For the past a few years, Korean society has faced crisis with Park Geunhye and government national affair’s State-authorized Textbook policy. Regardless of strong opposition the policy was forcefully announced but has not implemented. Director Baek Seungu calmly questions, “In 21st century that we live in why do we have to accept this State-authorized Textbook?” His question surprisingly goes in depth with Korea’s current modern history society and drew attentions of historians. Unlike its dry title, State-authorized Textbook is a documentary that carries its dynamic configurations of beauty. It also concludes how this imitation became very important in current Democratic society. Raising a dispute from his Project Cheonan Ship in 2013, Baek Seungu’s way of directing became much sharper than before. [KIM Youngjin]
